General Questions
- How do I install PdaNet? Do I need to hack my phone? How do I upgrade to a new version?
PdaNet is a regular Android application and can be installed on all Android phones. It doesn't require hacking or rooting your phone.
Simply download the installer to your Mac or Windows computer and run it, then follow on-screen instructions to install and connect. You can also install PdaNet directly from the phone by going to
http://junefabrics.com/m.
Since all upgrades are free, make sure you stay on the latest version. Follow the same instructions above to install any new build on the computer. If you are a registered user your license will be remembered.
- I don't have PdaNet on my Android phone. How do I install it?
For Windows users, if you already have PdaNet on the computer side, simply go to Start > Programs > PdaNet for Android and select "Install PdaNet to Phone", then wait for it to complete.
For Mac users, click on the PdaNet menu bar icon and select "Install PdaNet to Phone" from the menu.
If you have not yet installed PdaNet on the computer side, please download and install it from here.
- Does PdaNet use voice or data? Will I get extra charge from my carrier for using PdaNet?
PdaNet usage is identical to Internet usage on your phone. So it only goes through your data plan.
If you have an unlimited data plan (most smartphones do) then you should be covered.
- What is the difference between the free and full edition? How to get the full edition?
The free edition will start blocking secure web sites (web sites that require login) after the 14-days-trial expiration. You can purchase the full edition here.
After the purchase you will receive a serial code in the email. Please use it to unlock the full edition by clicking the PdaNet tray icon on the computer end (on Mac it is the menu bar icon) and select "Register".
Full edition and free edition have the same installer so there is no need to reinstall if you already have the free edition.
- I have lost my order receipt email, could you resend my serial code?
- How fast is the connection speed of PdaNet?
PdaNet can handle at least 35Mbps (35000kbps, currently no data service can even get close to that). It has been optimized to run with zero latency, which means you should expect the exact same download speed on the computer compared to your phone (except for Bluetooth DUN which may have a baud rate limit.)
However due to the nature of wireless data service, your actual connection speed very often can be a lot slower than the advertised value of the 3G/4G service, even if the signal display shows 5 bars. The speed will also be significantly different at different times and locations. To get the true speed you can run a speed test at http://dslreports.com/mspeed from either your phone or computer.
- How do I setup USB Tether on Mac?
- How do I setup Bluetooth connection from my computer?
- How do I get VPN to work using PdaNet?
Upgrade to version 3.0 and VPN should work.
- I am able to send SMS using PdaNet but not receive. What happens?
You must have another SMS app installed on your Android which is blocking other applications from seeing incoming SMS. Please check the settings of the third-party SMS application on the phone and see if there is such a setting you can turn off.
- How can I install two different versions of PdaNet on the same computer?
In order to have both versions of PdaNet on the computer, You will need to make a copy of your current PdaNet directory (under c:\program files), then install the other version. After the installation you will end up with two PdaNet directories, one for each phone. When you switch phones, make sure you exit PdaNet on the computer end then run the corresponding exe under the correct directory.
If one of the version is for Android, you have to install version 2.42 from here instead of the latest version.
- I have purchased PdaNet for Windows Mobile or Palm OS before, can I reuse my license?
The Android phone runs a completely different system. As a result PdaNet had to be rewritten and not covered by the upgrade track. However the Android version is priced at significantly less expensive.
- Can I use PdaNet to connect xbox 360 or ps3?
You need to connect PdaNet with a computer, then enable Internet Sharing on Windows over the PdaNet connection to share it with your game console.
Some xbox user may run into an MTU error in current build. We will try to resolve this problem in future updates.
- I have purchased but I have not received the email with the serial code.
In most cases you should receive the order receipt email with the PdaNet serial code within a couple of minutes after purchase. If you still have not received your code after 1 business day please let us know.
Normally this means either you have entered a typo in your email address or you have used a different email address for your payment. Sometimes the email could also be blocked by the spam filter of your email service.
- Does PdaNet support iPad?
Unfortunately with current Android OS (up to 2.1), no tethering solutions will work with iPad unless you root your Android phone first.
Unlike iPhone jailbreaking, rooting Android phones is not recommended for normal users. We have no plan to support it.
- Why isn't SMS agent working on my Android phone?
The SMS agent feature requires Android OS 1.6 or above. Some Android phones still only have Android 1.5. You need to wait for the Android 2.1 update coming from your carrier.
- How do I install PdaNet on a new Android phone?
If you still have PdaNet on the computer side, all you need to do is install PdaNet on the new phone directly from http://junefabrics.com/m. If you have already registered, your registration is saved on the computer side and you don't need to do it again.
- If I only purchase one copy of PdaNet, can I install it on multiple computers?
PdaNet licenses only go with the phone so there is no limit on the computer side. But if you do have multiple phones you will need multiple licenses.
- Why is my serial number not accepted when I try to register?
Try to make sure you copy/paste the serial number and email address without spaces. The email address has to be the one you used for purchasing PdaNet.
- Is Linux (Ubuntu etc.) supported?
Meanwhile only Bluetooth DUN is supported (requires android 2.0) on Linux.
We are working on a linux port for USB Tether but it may take a while.
- I have PdaNet on the computer, how do I reinstall PdaNet on the phone side?
On the phone's browser go to http://junefabrics.com/m. This will install the phone part directly from your browser.
- My question is not addressed above.
Installation Error
Connection Error
- PdaNet causes my computer to reboot/go into blue screen of death (BSOD) in version 2.45.
You are caught with a bad build we mistakenly uploaded at one point and this has been fixed. Please download again and reinstall.
If you still have this problem after reinstalling (usually means the system is still hanging on to the bad driver for some reason), on the computer go to Start->Programs->PdaNet for Android an select "Install Legacy Network Driver" and wait for it to complete. After that the problem should go away.
- PdaNet connection is established but I do not get Internet access on the computer end.
With PdaNet connected, try to make sure you are able to browse the web on the phone's browser. If not that means either you do not have data connection on your phone or you have to disable "Mobile Broadband" or any other built-in tethering feature on the phone.
If phone's browser still works, then the issue comes from the computer side. On the computer click on Start->Programs->PdaNet for Android and select "Install Legacy Network Driver", wait for it to complete and see if that fixes the issue.
- (Vista) During connection PdaNet crashes with error "PdaNetPC.exe has stopped working".
You got this error because some necessary system services have been turned off on your computer after Vista/XP is installed
(either by you or by your system administrator) and PdaNet is not allowed to create a dialup connection.
To fix this, go to Control Panel on your computer, select Administrative Tools then Services and turn back on all the Dialup or Remote connection related services (In particular one named "Remote Access Service").
- Connection error "Dialup failed, error=xxx".
This problem has been fixed in version 2.45. Please download and install the latest version on the computer.
- Abnormal disconnect (error=31)!
This error indicates a problem coming from the USB driver or USB connection. It does not happen to most users but we have seen it reported from users with the Samsung moment or G1. We will try to see if it is something we can work around in future updates.
- Please check your phone and make sure PdaNet (usb tether) has been turned on.
This indicates PdaNet is not running on your phone. On the phone please look for the PdaNet icon and launch it, then select the "Enable USB Tether" button.
If you could not find the PdaNet icon on your phone, please install it using the phone's browser and go to http://junefabrics.com/m.
- Execution Conflicts: PdaNet Desktop is already running.
If you are trying to connect PdaNet, you have clicked on the wrong icon.
You need to click on the PdaNet icon in the tray area (bottom-right of computer screen) and select "Connect" from the menu.
- T-mobile MyTouch (with the latest update) is not recognized by my computer.
The latest update of MyTouch has a bug that disabled USB debugging. To work around this issue, turn your phone off (take out battery and put it back) and then restart. As soon as the Droid screen
appears, plug in USB to computer and it should load the ADB driver. With that PdaNet should start working.
- I have purchased the full edition but PdaNet still act like free edition and block https.
If you haven't entered your code, please register by clicking on the PdaNet tray icon on the computer side (or menu bar icon on Mac) and select "Register". Enter your code in the receipt email and this will unlock the full version. Phone side will still say free edition but please ignore it.
- (Mac) Fail to launch PdaNet background service 2, err=61 (or 60)
Try to uninstall PdaNet on Mac first (run ~/PdaNetUninstall.sh), then reboot your computer and reinstall PdaNet Desktop client (and reboot). This time make sure you have chosen the Boot Driver during installation of PdaNet. This should fix the issue.
- After upgrading my Mac to Lion (10.7), I receive connection error "Fail to launch PdaNet background service 2, err=61"
You need to reinstall PdaNet after upgrading to Mac Lion. Please uninstall PdaNet first by running "~/PdaNetUninstall.sh" from Terminal, then reinstall it from http://junefabrics.com/android/mac.php
- (Mac) When connecting the PdaNet menubar icon keeps blinking and I have no Internet.
This is because the Network Interface create by PdaNet is not added on Mac automatically for some reason.
Try to open Networks Preferences and click on "+", then select the new Network Interface (the biggest "en" number such as en2 or en3) and click "Apply" with DHCP selected.
- When PdaNet is connected, it shows a "version mismatched" message. What should I do?
That means the phone side has been updated to a newer version so there is a chance that the version on the computer side may not be compatible.
On the computer side simply download and install the latest version here.
If you are a registered user you won't lose your registration.
- Connection error: WinUsb Device could not be opened, err=5.
On the computer try to reinstall with the following build instead and see if it fixes the issue:
32 bit or 64 bit.
This solution is for non-Samsung phone only. If you have a Samsung Moment, please refer to USB driver installation above.
- Please make sure your phone is attached to the computer and usb debugging is enabled on the phone.
If you start getting this error after you changed to a different Android phone, that means you need to reinstall the USB Driver. To do that, download and install PdaNet again on your computer, and select "Yes" when it prompts you to reinstall the USB driver.
You can also trouble shoot the USB driver issue with information in this page.
- I received "DNS Problem" on "please verify Internet access on your phone".
- Internet works fine but I am not able to send e-mails from the computer side.
That indicates your cell phone carrier is blocking the SMTP port to prevent mobile e-mail spamming.
You will need to check and see if your email service provides web access.
- Phone shows: "Data Call Failure Error Code 67. Registration failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect."
When you plugin your phone, if your phone prompts me to 'Choose Connection Type', make sure you select "Charge Only" or "USB Drive". Do NOT select 'Internet Sharing'.
- USB Connection Dropped, code=1
This error usually indicates a USB hardware or driver problem, such as the USB port or USB cable not providing enough power. Try to see if any of these helps: try to reboot your computer and plugin a different USB port; make sure your laptop is being charged; make sure you are using the USB cable that comes with your phone instead of a third party cable.
Sometimes the issue is caused by the phone dropping the USB debugging interface. You can verify this by opening Device Manager on the computer and see if the "ADB Interface" device is no longer listed.
If you have a HTC or Motorola phone, you can also try to see if an older Google USB driver works: on the computer go to Start->Programs->PdaNet and select "Install Legacy USB driver" then wait for it to tell you it is completed. Reconnect and see if it helps.
- PdaNet is connected without error but my computer still does not have any Internet access.
Most likely the Internet traffics are routed to other network interfaces on the computer.
On the computer go to Start->Programs->PdaNet for Android and select "Install Legacy Network Driver". Wait for it prompt and complete. After that PdaNet should start working.
- HTC sync error = -1 or HTC sync error = -2
The latest version of HTC Sync seems to cause a conflict for some PdaNet users with the Hero phone. You will have to uninstall HTC Sync and reinstall PdaNet to avoid the conflict. We will try to fix the compatibility issue in our future updates.
- My error is not addressed above.
